Those of us who live among the Great Lakes can get pretty smug about them.

From picturesque harbor towns sporting beautiful beaches along Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, to wild stretches of forest ringing Lake Superior, we’ve got summer swimming options galore. And the popular T-shirt slogan “No salt, No sharks, No problem” is no joke.

But the elements that make the Great Lakes so different from their saltier ocean cousins can also make them dangerous, the National Weather Service warns.

The bottom line: Floating in your favorite Great Lake can be like swimming in a washing machine.
