Strong gale force winds turned Lake Superior into a violent ocean of waves. Waves were reported as high as 24 feet near Marquette, attracting surfers.

People from all over the state went to various beaches in the U.P. to catch some of the lakes fury. One surfer advised that only experienced surfers should go out in those conditions.

“Even to the mind’s eye, you look and you’re getting snow pelted in your face and you’re thinking ‘what are you doing out here?’ and in the next moment you realize you’re warm and let’s go catch a wave, so take out the sharks, take out the salt water, take out the jellyfish and throw in some cold and you still got a whole lot of adventure.” Said sufer, Eric Cullem.

Many surfers said a thick wet suit is a must, and also reported feeling warmer in the water than outside.
