WEST OLIVE, MI — Citing concerns over cost and environmental damage, the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners voted 9 to 1 Tuesday to oppose a project to create a powerboat link between Grand Rapids and Lake Michigan by dredging the Grand River.

The resolution approved by the board is symbolic and does not have the ability to stop the project. But commissioners said it was important to give voice to the residents of Ottawa County who worry that dredging the river could hurt fish and wildlife, stir up contaminants beneath the river bed and carry unanticipated maintenance costs,
