You can now get a ticket in Michigan if you neglect to do a simple check of your boat for plants and organisms. That goes for canoes, kayaks and motor boats.

Newly expanded Michigan laws require boaters to take extra steps to ensure their boats and trailers are clean and dry just after they exit a body of water. The goal: Stop invasive species from hitching a ride from one body of water to another, a nuisance that costs the government and lake associations millions of dollars each year.
