Five Great Lakes lighthouses currently on the auction block have decades of Michigan’s maritime history embedded in their sturdy walls.

As remote outposts with rotating crews, they’ve also had their share of harrowing incidents and funny stories.

There’s the hulking Spanish-American War veteran who became a longtime lighthouse keeper. He loved to dress up like folk hero Paul Bunyan for his town’s homecoming parades.
