CLAYTON — Consumers could ingest small plastic debris by eating sea salt or drinking beer, bottled water and tap water, according to a chemistry expert.

Dozens of residents listened, asked questions and laughed at occasional jokes when Sherri A. “Sam” Mason shared her knowledge of microplastics — plastics smaller than 5 millimeters in diameter — Saturday at Save the River’s Winter Environmental Conference at the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel. Her presentation was one of several hosted by the environmental advocacy group.

Ms. Mason’s previous research influenced federal legislation that banned microbeads, small pieces of plastic used for exfoliation in hygiene products, in 2015.
