ELK RAPIDS, MI — How many tons of rock does it take to re-engineer a Lake Michigan reef? About 450 for starters.

That much limestone was strategically dumped into East Grand Traverse Bay this summer by the Nature Conservancy, which led a $181,000 project to restore a reef that functions as spawning ground for herring, whitefish and lake trout.
